I never got around to sharing my Best Songs You (Maybe) Didn’t Hear list for 2010 with the internets in general in December, so I’ve decided to mine it for fresh post material in February and March. I’m posting the songs in the order in which they would have appeared in the final playlist, so if you play along at home, you’ll have heard a tidy 80-ish minutes of great music when all is said and done. After a short break for vacation, I’m back on track with Broken Bells.
Broken Bells‘ self-titled debut was the best Gorillaz album released last year. While Damon Albarn was off confirming that he’s only as good as his collaborators by self-producing two exquisitely awful Gorillaz albums in 2010, his former Demon Days collaborator Danger Mouse hooked up with Shins frontman James Mercer, and the outcome was an excellent, slinky collection of electro-inflected indie-pop. DM’s hip-hop & dance sensibilities marry well with Mercer’s songs, and “The Ghost Inside” was an easy & quick addition to my 2010 list:
